A 26-Foot Aluminum Bi-Fold Door for Elicit Brewing in Fairfield, CT

PROJECT SCOPE

Type: Commercial - Restaurant/Brewery
Location: 111 Black Rock Tpke, Fairfield, CT
Age of Structure: Renovation
Window System: Bi-Fold Door System
Installer: A & E Glass West Haven

Breweries and restaurants often need their spaces to do more than one thing. A room that feels open and connected during normal service may need to become a separate event area later that evening, or two adjacent spaces may need to function independently without making either one feel closed off.

That kind of flexibility was a key benefit of the custom aluminum Bi-Fold Door Vetrina Windows manufactured for Elicit Brewing in Fairfield, Connecticut.

The finished installation creates a large movable glass partition within Elicit's distinctive industrial-style interior. When closed, the system physically separates different areas of the brewery while maintaining visibility and a sense of continuity.

When opened, the folding panels retract to the side, allowing the areas on either side of the wall to reconnect through a substantially wider opening.

A Large Custom Bi-Fold System Built for the Space

At approximately 26' 8" wide, this was a substantial custom opening. Vetrina designed and manufactured the system as a seven-panel aluminum bi-fold door with an outward-opening configuration that stacks to the right.

The frame and hardware were finished in black anodized aluminum, matching the darker architectural elements throughout the brewery. The door was glazed with 1-1/8" insulated clear tempered glass, consisting of two 1/4" tempered glass lites separated by a 5/8" air space.

Each folding panel is approximately 44 5/8" wide, allowing the entire wall to divide into manageable individual sections rather than relying on a few extremely large leaves. The system uses bottom rollers and top guides to support and control the folding panels, along with dedicated hinges, locking components and seals at the panel joints.

The partition also incorporated a custom muntin pattern that carries across the entire opening. The result is the black grid appearance seen in the completed installation, giving the aluminum system some of the visual character of traditional industrial steel windows while retaining the functionality of a modern folding glass wall.

Designed to Belong in the Interior

One of the most successful aspects of this installation is that the door does not look like something added to the building after the fact.

In the completed space, the black aluminum grid works naturally alongside the brewery's dark ceiling elements, wood finishes, oversized pendant lighting and other industrial details. From a distance, the closed door reads almost like a permanent architectural glass wall.

At the same time, it remains fully operable.

That distinction matters in hospitality design. A conventional framed wall would permanently divide the rooms. A completely open floor plan would provide no way to separate them. The bi-fold system gives the operator both options without sacrificing the appearance of the space.

Even while the door is closed, its large glazed area preserves visual connections between the rooms. Guests can still see activity on the other side, which helps maintain the lively, open atmosphere that breweries and larger restaurants often want.

One Space, More Ways to Use It

The finished project photos of the updated Elicit Brewing interior in this article show one of the biggest advantages of an interior folding glass wall in a hospitality environment:

The floor plan can change without changing the building

A system like this can let a brewery or restaurant separate a dining area, bar, game room, lounge, or private-event area when needed, then reconnect it to the larger venue at other times.

For operators, that opens up several possibilities.

One part of the venue can host a private party while the rest stays open to regular customers. A noisy entertainment or game area can be separated from a quieter dining area. Different sections can open or close depending on attendance. Larger events can use the combined footprint, while smaller gatherings can occupy a more intimate room.

The exact use will vary from project to project, but the basic advantage is the same: the architecture can adapt to how the business operates that day.

Why Bi-Fold Doors Work Especially Well for Breweries and Restaurants

Large commercial bi-fold doors are often associated with patios and indoor-outdoor restaurants, but interior applications can be just as useful.

Unlike a conventional pair of doors, a multi-panel folding wall can open most of a very large wall opening. Unlike a fixed glass partition, it does not permanently divide the floor plan.

That combination makes these systems particularly useful for:

  • breweries, taprooms and beer halls

  • restaurants and bars

  • private dining and event spaces

  • entertainment venues

  • hotels and clubhouses

  • food halls

  • lounges and game rooms

  • conference and multipurpose spaces

The extensive glazing is also important. When closed, a glass bi-fold partition maintains sightlines and lets light continue through the space instead of creating the visual interruption of an opaque wall.

Depending on the glazing, seals, and configuration selected for a particular project, the closed system can also provide a more substantial environmental and acoustic separation between spaces than leaving the opening completely exposed. Select project-specific sound, thermal, or weather performance based on the application's requirements.

Commercial Bi-Fold Doors Can Be Built Around the Project

The Elicit Brewing installation is a good example of why large folding walls generally should not be treated as an off-the-shelf product.

Panel count, opening direction, stacking location, overall dimensions, glass, threshold design, hardware, and finish all affect how the door interacts with the building and how people will use the space.

Vetrina's commercial aluminum bi-fold systems can be configured for both interior partitions and exterior openings, with systems ranging from 2 to 14 folding sashes and a variety of glazing, finish, threshold, and hardware options.

For a restaurant, brewery, or event venue, those choices can be coordinated around circulation patterns, furniture layouts, patio access, private-event requirements, and the project's architectural character, rather than forcing the building to accommodate a predetermined door.

A Flexible Glass Wall for a Flexible Hospitality Space

At Elicit Brewing, the finished bi-fold door accomplishes two jobs at once.

Architecturally, it becomes part of the brewery's industrial interior, with black anodized aluminum framing and a detailed grid pattern that complements the surrounding space.

Functionally, the roughly 26-foot-wide opening can shift from a transparent partition to a large connection between adjoining areas when the folding panels open.

For busy hospitality spaces where the layout needs to change throughout the week, that flexibility can be far more useful than either a permanent wall or a permanently open floor plan.
