Replacing older residential windows does not necessarily mean reproducing the same window technology that was originally installed. At this private residence in Vienna, Virginia, Vetrina Windows designed and manufactured a complete package of 21 custom Ardmore Series 70mm aluminum windows, replacing the home's original double-hung windows with a combination of high-performance tilt & turn and fixed units.
The project demonstrates how modern thermally broken aluminum fenestration can be incorporated into a traditionally styled home while improving functionality, comfort and architectural flexibility.
21 Custom Windows Designed for the Existing Home
Rather than working from standard stock sizes, Vetrina produced each window according to the openings and requirements of the residence.
The final package included a combination of tilt & turn windows and fixed windows, with operable units prepared for screens. The tilt & turn windows were also ordered with microventilation, providing an additional ventilation position for controlled airflow without requiring the sash to be fully opened.

Dual-Color Frames for Interior and Exterior Design

For the Vienna residence, the homeowners selected a white interior frame and a dark anthracite exterior finish.

Tilt & Turn Functionality in a Traditional American Home
The project also replaced conventional double-hung operation with Vetrina's tilt & turn configuration.
A tilt & turn window combines two opening functions in the same sash. In the turn position, the window swings inward like a casement window, providing a large opening and making the exterior side of the glass easier to access for cleaning. In the tilt position, the top of the sash opens inward for ventilation while most of the window remains closed.
For this project, microventilation adds another option for introducing a smaller amount of airflow.
This gives the homeowner significantly more control over ventilation than a conventional fixed or double-hung configuration while maintaining a simple appearance when the windows are closed.
Thermally Broken Aluminum for Residential Performance
Aluminum is valued for its strength, dimensional stability and ability to support relatively large areas of glass with narrow profiles. Modern residential aluminum systems, however, are very different from the basic aluminum windows commonly found in older buildings.
The Ardmore 70mm system used here incorporates a thermal break within the aluminum frame and sash, reducing direct thermal transfer between the exterior and interior portions of the profiles.
The project was also specified with 1-1/8" insulated glass units incorporating Low-E glazing, an argon-filled air space and a black spacer, creating a complete fenestration assembly designed around thermal and weather performance.
That difference was noticeable to the homeowner after the installation. In their Google review, they specifically reported an improvement in interior comfort and reduced drafts compared with the original windows, while also commenting on the noticeably substantial construction of the new units.
