For this Brooklyn brownstone residence, Vetrina Windows designed and manufactured a custom five-panel aluminum Bi-Fold Door connecting a newly renovated kitchen with the home's rear patio.
The project is a perfect example of why folding glass doors work so well in urban residential architecture. When the system is closed, nearly the entire rear wall becomes glass, bringing abundant daylight into the kitchen and creating an uninterrupted visual connection to the outdoor space. When the doors open, the five panels fold together toward one side, turning the same wall into a broad passage between the kitchen and patio.
Instead of simply adding a door to the backyard, the system fundamentally changes the way the interior and exterior spaces relate to one another.
A Five-Panel Door Designed Specifically for the Opening
This was not a standard-size patio door adapted to fit the house. Vetrina engineered the system specifically around the home's rear opening.
The completed aluminum frame measures 158" wide and 114-7/8" high, creating an opening more than 13 feet wide and approximately 9-1/2 feet tall. The system consists of five individual sashes, each approximately 30-1/4" wide.
The doors were configured to open outward and stack to the right when viewed from the interior. This keeps the folding panels outside the kitchen rather than consuming valuable interior floor area.
That configuration is particularly useful here. The kitchen island, cabinetry, and circulation paths can extend close to the glass wall without accommodating the swing radius of large conventional doors.
Opening the Entire Kitchen to the Patio
One of the main advantages of a bi-fold door over a traditional sliding patio door is how much of the opening you can actually use.
A conventional two-panel slider generally leaves a significant portion of the opening permanently occupied by glass. A multi-panel folding door works differently. The individual sashes fold together and stack at the edge of the opening, allowing most of the wall to open.
Vetrina's residential bi-fold systems can be configured with 2 to 14 sashes, with either inward- or outward-opening arrangements depending on the project.
In this Brooklyn kitchen, that capability is immediately apparent in the finished photographs. With the five panels folded to the side, the kitchen and rear terrace become much more closely connected.
For everyday use, the homeowners can operate only the access panel. When entertaining, cooking outdoors, or simply enjoying good weather, they can open the entire system.
A Modern Glass Wall in a Traditional Brooklyn Home
The project also illustrates how contemporary aluminum fenestration can work within older residential architecture.
From the exterior, the large black-framed opening creates a crisp, modern feature without overwhelming the traditional proportions of the Brooklyn residence. From inside, the dark aluminum forms a clean architectural frame around views of the neighboring brownstones, mature trees, and private outdoor space.
The choice of RAL 9004M black framing with matching black hardware complements the kitchen particularly well.
Warm wood cabinetry, stone surfaces and light-colored flooring dominate the interior palette, while the dark bifold frame provides a strong visual contrast. Rather than competing with the kitchen design, the door effectively frames the outdoor view.
This is one of the reasons aluminum systems work particularly well in high-end renovations. Their relatively slim profiles allow more glass and less visual obstruction while still providing the structural strength needed for large openings.
Large Glass Panels Without Losing Year-Round Comfort
Creating a 13-foot-wide glass opening in a kitchen requires more than attractive framing.
The door was specified with insulated glazing consisting of 1/4" clear tempered Low-E SN68 glass, a 5/8" insulated space with argon gas, and a second 1/4" clear tempered pane, which results in an excellent barrier from the elements, as well as the busy city.
This allows the large expanse of glass to provide natural light and outdoor views while still functioning as part of the building envelope.
Vetrina's residential bifold platform uses thermally broken 6063 T-5 aluminum framing and can accommodate double or triple glazing. The system incorporates weatherstripping and perimeter seals to help control air and moisture infiltration.
For homeowners considering a similar renovation, these details matter. A large glass wall has to perform through New York winters and hot, humid summers, not just look good on the day it is installed.
Designed for Large Residential Openings
This Brooklyn project is substantial, but it still falls comfortably within the Vetrina residential bifold platform's capabilities.
Individual panels can be produced up to approximately 47-1/4" wide and 120" tall, with maximum sash weights up to 264 lb. Systems can incorporate up to 14 panels and can even be configured around 90-degree corners without a conventional corner mullion.
This Brooklyn door uses five relatively narrow panels, which helps the panels fold into a compact stack while maintaining the tall proportions required by the architecture.
The finished system demonstrates one of the central advantages of aluminum bifold construction: very large openings can be divided into manageable moving panels without sacrificing the feeling of a continuous glass wall.
Why Bi-Fold Doors Work So Well for Kitchens
Few areas of a home benefit from indoor-outdoor connectivity as much as the kitchen.

Large folding doors require substantially more engineering than their appearance may suggest.
We paid special attention to the hinges, bottom rollers, intermediate locking components, shoot bolts, handles, cylinders, and guides that coordinate the five sashes as a complete operating system.
Our precision engineering of the frame, glazing, seals, hardware, and surrounding construction allows the final design to perfectly come together at the jambs, intermediate panel connections, head, and sill.
The goal is for all of that engineering to largely disappear once the door is installed.
What the homeowner experiences is simple: a wall of glass that can be opened when desired and securely closed when it is not.
Custom Fenestration Rather Than an Off-the-Shelf Door
Large architectural openings rarely fit neatly into standard catalog dimensions.

For this residence, that meant engineering a five-panel system specifically around a 158-1/2" rough opening, coordinating an outward-opening stack-right configuration, selecting the black finish and specifying the insulated Low-E glazing package before manufacturing.
