For this private residence in Washington, DC, Vetrina Windows designed and manufactured a custom Vision Plus aluminum sliding door to create a direct connection between the home's kitchen and dining area and its private backyard patio.
The finished project clearly shows where a large-format sliding glass system can make the greatest difference in a home. When closed, the expansive glazing fills the kitchen and dining area with natural light while preserving a clear visual connection to the patio. When opened, the four sliding panels come together to create a wide opening between the interior and exterior, effectively extending the living space outdoors.
The result is a practical architectural feature that changes how the kitchen, dining area, and patio can be used year-round.
A Custom Four-Panel Vision Plus Sliding Door
This particular Vision Plus system was designed as a four-sash, four-rail configuration with a concealed bottom track. The fabricated frame measures approximately 143-1/2" wide, or just under 12 feet, with a total frame height of approximately 98-9/16" including the recessed lower assembly. The shop drawings coordinate the system with a 144" wide rough opening.
Unlike a conventional two-panel patio slider, the four-rail configuration lets the individual panels move on separate tracks. As the completed project photos show, the panels can be collected toward one side of the opening, leaving most of the wall open for circulation between the kitchen and patio.
That flexibility is particularly valuable in spaces designed for entertaining. Instead of having a single doorway separating the kitchen from the backyard, much of the wall can effectively disappear when the weather allows.
A Concealed Track for a Cleaner Indoor-Outdoor Transition
One defining feature of the installation is its recessed bottom track.
The lower frame and sliding hardware are set into the floor assembly rather than placing a large conventional sliding-door threshold on top of the finished floor. The detailed section also coordinates the bearing profiles, integrated floor guides, and drainage components within the recessed assembly.
Visually, this makes a substantial difference.
From inside the kitchen, the flooring flows naturally toward the glass wall, with no bulky raised frame interrupting the room. From the patio, the same low-profile transition helps the exterior space feel like an extension of the interior rather than a completely separate area.
For kitchens, dining rooms, family rooms, and other spaces that regularly connect to a patio, pool deck, or backyard, this is one of the strongest applications for a minimalist sliding system.
Triple Glazing for a Large Residential Opening
Large glass areas have to do more than simply look good. They also become a significant part of the home's exterior envelope.
For this project, the Vision Plus door was specified with a substantial triple-glazed insulated glass unit consisting of three 1/4" clear tempered glass panes separated by two 5/8" air spaces. The exterior glazing specification incorporates Low-E SN68 glass.
The Vision Plus platform is specifically designed to accommodate large areas of insulated glazing. Vetrina's Vision Plus system specifications allow double or triple glazing up to 2-3/16" thick, while the thermally broken aluminum construction is designed to combine very large glass sizes with meaningful thermal and acoustic performance.
That makes the system particularly suitable for applications like this one, where maximizing glass is important, but the opening still has to function as an exterior wall in every season.
Pure White Aluminum Complements the Kitchen
This project also shows that minimalist aluminum sliding systems do not have to use the dark or black finishes commonly associated with contemporary architecture.
For this residence, the frame and hardware were specified in Pure White, RAL 9010M.
That choice works especially well in this kitchen. The white aluminum blends into the surrounding white walls and trim, allowing the glass, backyard, and natural light to become the dominant visual elements rather than the frame itself.
Combined with the warm wood cabinetry, flooring, and furniture, the white frame keeps the room bright and residential while maintaining the clean, narrow-profile look of a modern aluminum system.
It is also a good example of why finish selection should be considered part of the architecture rather than an afterthought. Vetrina systems can be configured in various colors and finishes, including dual-tone options in which the interior and exterior finishes differ.
Why Sliding Doors Work So Well Between Kitchens and Patios
A kitchen or dining area opening onto a patio is one of the most useful locations for a large sliding glass system.
Traditional swing doors require clear space for the door leaf and typically limit passage to the width of one or two relatively narrow openings. A multi-panel sliding system uses the wall opening much more efficiently.
For everyday use, the homeowner can open only as much of the system as needed. For parties, outdoor dining, or warmer weather, the panels can be moved farther apart to create a much larger connection between the kitchen and backyard.
At the same time, the expansive glass keeps that relationship intact even when the doors are closed.
The effect is especially noticeable in an urban residence like this one, where the private backyard is an important extension of the home's usable space. Instead of looking at the patio through a conventional doorway, the entire dining area visually opens toward it.
Vision Plus for Large Residential Openings
